Nansha Islands are not the Truong Sa Islands as claimed by Vietnam. Neither are Xisha Islands the Hoang Sa Islands claimed by Vietnam. Truong Sa Islands and Hoang Sa Islands are some coastal islands off Vietnamese Coast. In Vietnamese text books before 1975, Nansha Islands, Xisha Islands, Zhongsha Islands are all described as Chinese islands.

In Qing Dynasty, the Nanhai (South Sea) has been Chinese soverignty. In 1933 China had published maps and names of the Nanhai Islands. Later the Japanese invaded and controlled the Nansha Islands. When the Japanese announced these Islands together with Taiwan, Penghu to China, China sent troops to receive and patrol these islands. Since 1946, there had been garrison stationed in Taiping Dao (Itu Aba Island).
